THE SHUTES interview

What were your primary pursuits when you founded THE SHUTES and are they still relevant today?
To make the music we want to hear. And to make what we consider to be a perfect record, these are both still relevant.

What inspires you? Do you think that muses are necessary or are you inspired by yourself from within?
Mostly other music, but also the island we live on and especially the autumn, there's something incredibly magical about the autumn, the light, the air, the colours.

The music scene has changed much in recent years and, in my view, the priorities equally. The spectrum of bands is very large. What a band needs in your opinion according to stand out from the others- because I think, you do- your sound is different and Michaels voice has recognition.
Yeah often a vocal can make the different but above all I think you need the best songs....I also think interesting production as opposed to 'good' production.

,Hits Like Mourning’ is a wonderful EP. The songs transport much warmth and deep.

It’s your Debut-EP.
The EP will be our debut EP yes, and the album will also be our first album, we're excited to get in finished!!

Nowadays there is no-longer just the Vinyl also CDs and Mp³s.  Especially the internet-download is very dominant. What do you think of the mass accessibility of the music?
I think it's great from a live point of view; it raises awareness about your music so much that you'll get ten times more people at your show than you would have done ten years ago!!

Soon is the Bestival on your home island Isle of Weight. Are you looking forward to play there and do you prefer festivals or concerts in clubs?

I like both for different reasons, small packed venues often have better atmospheres, but maybe that opinion would change if we played to a big festival audience!

In Germany there are many problems with gentrification and the closing of several good clubs. Did you notice something similar in England?

No, pubs are struggling here but live music venues seem to doing better that ever, lots of people go out for live music now.

What belongs for you to a perfect gig?

A good crowd, we have to play better than ever before, meeting lots and lots of people afterwards......from another band, just playing the songs you like, like they mean it.

Three statements about The Shutes.
Trees don't necessarily agree with you, they just don't say anything. Giants have to stay inside, they are just too big.
